Life My Words

WHEN YOU SEE ME

See me

When they look at you or me,

have you ever wondered what it is they truly see?

I guess this time in America has caused me to think.

When they see me —

Am I lovely or am I sugarcane sweet,

Could I be chocolate with a big ole’ glop of cream?

Or would they consider me the sour taste in their mouth,

That one they’ve always had trouble spitting on out.

The world is in trouble because what they see,

Isn’t what my people have ever claimed to be.

We are not your violence nor are we your hate,

We just want to be seen as equals for goodness sake.

Though we may not be perfect and at times hurt each other,

That is no excuse to bash us because of our color.

‘Cause baby this chocolate is sweet and soulful no matter the shade,

You have no right to make us feel disadvantaged for how we were made.

Take care and rest easy George Floyd and all the many others,

I can’t believe that our community is mourning the loss of another black brother.

The death of George Floyd weighs heavily on me, as does the death of all those who have lost their lives before him. As a woman of color in a country that houses people (not all, but naturally there are some) who continue to disregard people like me, hunt people like my brothers, and violate the culture that Africans & African Americans pride themselves in maintaining — I am disturbed. When will it stop? We are taught to love ourselves for who we are, what cultures & beliefs we were raised on, and all the things that make us black af… However, should the lesson not have been for others who aren’t like us to love us just as they love themselves?

We are all human. We all bleed the same. We all hurt the same, so can’t we all love each other in the same way that God loves us?

For he so loved the world, that he put his begotten son on the cross to die for our sins, so that we may be made brand new in God’s perfect light.

God help us all. X
