THE TRUTH ABOUT “ADULTING”

Our parents weren’t lying.

Adulting is so freaking hard most days.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I was a kid — I couldn’t wait to be an adult. I couldn’t wait to live my life according to me and not have to follow any more “stupid” rules.

Watching the parentals make use of their day as they saw fit enticed me. They always told me adulting wasn’t everything, and one day I’d see. However, as far as I was concerned, my parents didn’t follow any rules and I couldn’t wait for my time to come.

Although, these days being a few weeks shy of my 23rd birthday, I’m trying to recall what I thought was so dang fantastic about adulting.

I guess I could have sworn from my viewpoint adulting was…

Waking up whenever you wanted.

Hanging out with friends whenever you wanted.

Buying whatever your heart desired without being limited by anyone.

If you got the travel bug, packing a bag and catching a flight.

Having no set curfews.

Making your own rules and following them, only if you wanted to.

With a major emphasis being on what “you” wanted.

These days, I now know adulting is actually…

Paying your rent on time.

Tons of planning and constant use of planners.

Worrying about pretty much everything ($$$, food, SO — in that order LOL).

Stressing over your LinkedIn profile.

Finding a new place to live once your lease is up.

Meeting work deadlines.

Meeting school deadlines or else.

Constantly asking for recommendation letters at every turn.

Updating your resume a million times a day.

Drafting and sending loads and loads of professional emails.

Making tough decisions about removing people from your life, permanently.

Having to pay for practically EVERYTHING (money disappears so fast these days).

Is this what the hell my parents were going through?!

I’m almost certain now that I must have glamorized adulting in my head all those years ago because this is not what I imagined it to be. Not to say that you can’t travel whenever you see fit, or buy whatever you want, but it’s all based on several factors and not as willy nilly as it once appeared.

So to those who haven’t reached this semi-glorious stage, take it from the rest of us adults over here “adulting”.

Bask in your youth. Hell appreciate it a little bit more than I did because one day you’ll be 22 years old paying a light bill and realize how much you miss…

Waking up whenever you wanted.

The biggest concern in your life being if Whitney was going to come over and play dress up.

Not paying for anything (oh how I miss those days).

Roaming the school halls, wondering what they’ll be serving for lunch.

Coming home to a home cooked meal by Mother Dearest.

Binging on a TV show till the wee hours of the morning without any regrets.

Having limits, ya know?

As for the babes doing the adulting thing with me.

May we adult with grace and longevity like our parents have for many many years before us.

Gonna go pay a bill or something now,

Thelms xx
